African American History Month Art : Digitally Edited African American Art

My students used a variety of photo editing apps in order to complete this assignment. For Black History Month, they each downloaded several photographs and had to edit each one with a different app. Click down on the bottom on the page for the lesson plan instructions

How to change your @edmodo avatar w/ @piterwilson Stop Motion Webcam #edtech #web20 #socialmedia #studentgallery

Students got to create animated "movies" of themselves utilizing the netbook's built in web cam and the great website Web Cam Stop Motion 

I have used other Web cam sites in the past, such as GIFUP, ( you can CLICK HERE to check out a previous post that I made using GIFUP for the same purpose)

But what I like better about Web Cam stop motion is that you can take up to 20 photos, it keeps track of them using the "onion skin" mode and it works great with the built in web cam

I gave my students the option to change their Edmodo avatar or display it on the class wall for Edmodo. If you scroll down to the bottom of the post - you can see our student gallery

DIRECTIONS TO APPEAR ON EDMODO WALL:

1. Plan out a work of animation 

2. If the site asks for access to the web cam / microphone ALLOW

3. Shoot 20 Photos of doing something in a progressive movement

4. Hit: "Sava and Publish Animation"

5. Then select "Watch this Animation" to save the actual image, you can also post it to Facebook or Twitter by selecting the other options

6. Your animation will appear on its own screen, then select "Download this animation"

7. Your image will now appear on its own web page. In case you get a red "X" on the screen, go back to the last step and right click on the "Download" link and select "Save Link As" or "Save Target As" instead

8. Once your image appears on its own web page (probably surrounded by just white) right click on the image and select "Save Image As / Same Picture As"

9. Make sure you know WHERE you are saving it, I'd recommend your "My Pictures" folder

10. NOW go onto Edmodo

11. Type something in the status update box, such as "here is my pic"

12. Click "file" to attach

13. Browse for the file you just downloaded and hit open or ok

14. In the send to box - send it to your class

DIRECTIONS FOR EDMODO AVATAR:

Follow the previous steps 1-10

11. In Edmodo, click on Account > Settings

12. Hit the "browse" box next "upload a photo" 

(NOTE: YOUR IMAGE CAN NOT BE OVER 1 MB. YOU MAY HAVE TO LIMIT YOUR WEB CAM MOVIE TO ABOUT 10 IMAGES OR LESS, OR USE ANOTHER PROGRAM SUCH AS GIMP TO CHANGE THE SIZE)

13. Browse for your file and hit ok / open

14. Save your personal info

7th grade @Gimp collage of Perspective drawing student gallery #artsed #edtech #web2.0

7th graders at BWMS were introduced to the concepts of One Point Perspective and Surrealism. In the past, I normally allow the students to draw a room and then cut out images from magazines that would demonstrate the elements of Surrealism into their drawing.

This year, we scanned the original perspective drawings in, which you can FIND HERE by clicking the link to the students' original work.

Students would then watch the various GIMP tutorials that I made up so that they knew how to download images, cut them out and insert them into their drawings in the form of a digital collage. Like you may have read in my previous posts, GIMP is an excelent program to edit photos and it is a free alternative to Photoshop.

Unfortunately, it would seem that the students still had a difficult time watching the tutorials and then creating their collage as a .JPG and post it on Edmodo - but I was really pleased to see the work that they posted here for you to see.

GIMP is a free tool that you can use as an alternative to editing photos and doing special effects. If you would like to use Adobe Photoshop with your students but don't want to shell out the money - this open source alternative is an excellent resource for you

My students will be cutting/editing photos of themselves to either create a digital portrait of themselves, or possibly insert themselves into a movie poster.  Please view these tutorials that I created below with Jing software so that you can create your work of art and post it on Edmodo for the class to share:

Here is a collection of the work that my students did utilizing the Ipod's Fluid FX app. Students demonstrated exaggeration or distortion on their work to contrast their traditional grid drawing portrait.
