Build your Wild Self Stories : 6th graders collaboratively create Avatars w/ Pages

6^th Grade Media Arts students utilized the web site “Build Your Wild Self” to design themselves as a regular avatar and one that features animal characteristics. The students took screen captures of their avatars off of the web site and then imported them into the publishing app – Pages

Within Pages, the students got to digitally edit their photos, such as inserting borders on them and cropping out parts of the photo that they didn’t want. Once the photos were laid out, the students collaborated with a partner to write a story about how they turned into a monster.

One student would write the intro to the story, then exchange iPads to write the final paragraph on how they became a monster.  Check out some of these great and colorful published works that will soon become an iBook.

BWMS Robotics Club getting ready for Florence competition

Black Water got to participate in the First Lego League (FLL) competition in Florence on Dec 1st, 2012. There was a lot of work to be done for the show - a Core Values Poster, Robot Design and Game along with Creative Projects. Check out some of the things we made along the way

 But in the end, it was all worth it. Our one team, The Robo Bears got 2nd Place for the Research Project. The Return of the Robo Bears team got 2nd Place overall.

Evolution of a Robo Bear - Using Drawcast to design the BWMS Robotics logo

 I was asked to design the BWMS Robotics Team Logo for 2012. I was inspired by the Lego Robot, our Bear mastcot and Johnny 5 from "Short Circuit."

After the pencil drawing was done, I imported it into Drawcast and digitally inked it as one of the top layers (The Foreground)

Afterwards, I colored on the Midground layer using the Drawcast app. I really love this app as I have used it for a variety of art making projects so far. I look forward to doing some more in the future with my students. 

Student interview creating Greek Myth on Animation Creator w/ Lesson Plan

 I interviewed one of my students that was using the Animation Creator app on the iPad to create a cartoon inspired a Greek myth. I found some great resources for the project that perhaps you can use Myth, Writing or Digital Storytelling in your class.

SC Education Oversight Committee Student Movies Innovation Contest

The EOC site asks the students, "How is Black Water preparing you to be innovative," after my students did a previous lesson of experimenting with film making with an iMovie trailer - they now designed a 2 minute video for this contest.

I was really pleased with the majority of work that the kids made. Some of them used titles to help reinforce the message of Innovation, interviewed students and staff of BWMS to get their input and some even made their own music using the Garageband app

7th grade Toontastic Memoirs iBook

By playing around with the iBooks author app and Bookry authoring web site I have been able to take the memoir writing that my 7th graders did using the Pages app along with the works of animation they made in Toontastic into an iBook

I am still tinkering around with the iBooks format but it would seem that the files can be found on the Bookry site to be downloaded as PDFs or in the iBook format

My first work is pretty much just text pasted from PDFs into an iBook based on 7-1 (2nd block's) writing
